Yahoo Mail adds ‘Undo Sent’ in latest update, can it challenge Gmail?
Yahoo Mail on Thursday introduced several new updates for iOS and Android operating platforms key among them being an ‘Undo Sent’ option. These updates are focused on allowing users to add personal touch to their inbox, but the big question is can it challenge Google’s Gmail?
In June, Reuters news agency reported that both Verizon Communications and AT&T are set to make third and final round bids for Yahoo’s ‘core’ business of mail, Web and advertising products.
Reuters quoted web industry researcher ComScore in its report. According to ComScore, Yahoo Mail US mobile use doubled to 36.5 million users per month over the three years to March, even as Yahoo mail desktop use nearly halved. That is slightly faster mobile growth in percentage terms than Gmail, but Gmail is adding more users: Gmail had 89.6 million mobile users, more than Yahoo’s combined 67.8 million desktop and mobile.
A telecommunication company could give Yahoo Mail distribution on mobile devices that gives it a fighting chance to compete with Gmail and Apple Mail, which come pre installed on many Android and Apple devices, analysts said. Yahoo’s media unit could get a similar boost. In exchange telecom companies can benefit from internet giant’s technology for placing advertisements.
‘Undo Sent’ is however only available to iOS users. After one presses send, an option to “undo” appears at the bottom of inbox feed for three seconds. Clicking on that will stop the email from going.
For Android users, Yahoo has introduced the Stationery feature that allows one to add an extra touch to emails, making that birthday wish to a best friend or thank you letter to Grandma that much more special.
Using “Xobni” technology, Yahoo will now give iOS users options to search for a person in mail, the company said in a statement.
In addition to their most recent emails, one will also be able to see the contact card with information including picture, phone number and email history.
A few other updates include document preview, home screen widgets, disable swiping, spacing and update to themes.
Yahoo has rolled out new features such as an inbox capable of accessing other email services and a password-free sign-in that verifies users via text message in the last one year.
