Reliance Jio 4G full launch set for August, will offer free voice with data: Report
Reliance Jio Infocomm’s 4G services could launch on August 15, and the first plan will be called Freedom with free voice services bundled with data, says a report on Economic Times.
The Economic Times report quotes people familiar with its plans, and says the data plans will be cheaper compared to what rivals offer currently. In April this year, Reliance Jio’s soft launch took place with the service being rolled out to employees.
Reliance Lyf, which is the smartphone brand of the company, is already in the top five when it comes to smartphone vendors in India. Recently, price-cuts were announced on budget Lyf phones, with the cheapest 4G-VoLTE ready phones retailing at Rs 2,999. The big advantage with these phones is customers can get a Reliance Jio with three months of data service free.
Reliance Jio holds a pan-India license in the 4G spectrum, and will be offering only 4G LTE connectivity; it won’t have 3G or 2G services like other telecom players. Reliance’s total investment is nearly Rs 34,000 crores in this venture, and the pilot launch has already seen 70 lakh users download 13 million GB of data at an average of 19.2 GB per user, according to company data.
Reliance Jio will offers its services through an all-LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. Voice services on Jio will be through VoLTE (voice over LTE), which offers higher call quality, along with faster video and multimedia services.
With Reliance Jio, the focus it appears will be on speed and pricing. For now, Reliance is letting interested customers who register on the jio.com website, get an early preview to the service. The data services are free for three months on the 4G connection.
On speed, we’ve had a chance to test out Reliance Jio speeds and for now they look pretty solid, better than what most other players appear to be offering. The RJio SIM we tested offered us a minimum download speed of over 8Mbps. However, the average speeds were double this at over 18Mbps. The download speeds came in the range of 6Mbps to 10Mbps.
We’ll have to wait see if Jio 4G’s full commercial roll-out takes place in August as per the latest report, or if there is another delay.
