Google is reportedly working on a mixed reality headset, on the lines of Microsoft’s HoloLens, as against the Oculus Rift. Google Glass is no longer available to consumers, but it is available to corporations for use in some applications.

The headset will have it’s own dedicated screen built in. A computer or a mobile phone is not necessary for the headset to work. The focus will be more on augmented reality content, as against gaming, which is the kind of experiences most offered by dedicated virtual reality headsets today. A release date has not been announced yet, but it is a major part of the future plans by Google, a report in Engadget says.

Early this year, Google spun off a virtual reality division in the company, lead by Clay Bavor. Google has released a pointer for interacting with virtual reality and augmented reality applications. Huawei will launch the first Android smartphone to support Daydream. Google has shipped over 5 million cardboard headsets, which is a cheap way for new consumers to have a taste of a virtual reality experience. Google’s Expeditions apps recently got a public launch, which is a virtual reality field trip app for teachers and students. However, Google does not offer a high end dedicated headset yet.
