Coal India Limited (CIL), the coal mining PSU giant has set aside a whopping Rs.235 crores fund, 50% of the company’s total Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) war chest of Rs.470 Crores budgeted for the fiscal 2014-15, for providing hygienic sanitation in schools and in the households of underprivileged by constructing individual toilet facilities.

The company said this was in response to the call given to the corporate sector by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India for ‘Clean India’ initiative on 15th of August.

The amount of Rs.235 Crores would be utilized for creating modern sanitation facilities in schools operating in the command areas of CIL’s subsidiary companies and in the villages of economically backward districts, which lack Toilet facilities identified by coal companies through a baseline survey. CIL’s Mining operation are currently in 429 mines spread across 8 states viz WestBengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, M.P, U.P, Chattisgarh, Maharastra and North Eastern states.

CIL will be engaging various NGOs for the construction of toilets as well as awareness campaigns for better sanitation. A total of around 1 Lakh Households would be benefited by this sanitation initiative. This apart, around 6,000 toilet facilities would be built in schools also.

This hygiene drive is targeted to be completed within March 2015, through engagement of NGO agencies by coal companies.
